Due to a possible interlinking in the 6th semester, both courses can be studied in a total of eight semesters, i.e. in four years.

The course on Wigs, Make-up and Special Make-up Effects for Stage and Screen at the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding is unique in its form worldwide. All aesthetic, conceptual and stylistic aspects of the versatile professional field of make-up design are taught and trained at the highest level.

The focus of the course is on learning artistic and analytical skills and developing the creative personality of a make-up artist. Thanks to the well-founded and wide-ranging training, graduates have an excellent placement rate in theatre and film at home and abroad.

 

An essential prerequisite for applying to study make-up design at the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding is a keen interest in theatre, film, culture and the corresponding artistic and technical skills. Places are allocated on the basis of a pre-selection and the results of the aptitude test.

The following requirements must be met for admission to the Bachelor's course:

  • Submission of a portfolio with own creative designs to assess the relevant artistic talent (figurines, drawings, collages, photos and documentation of creative work).
  • Abitur / Fachabitur / Mittlere Reife and a completed apprenticeship
  • An internship in the theatre and film industry is recommended
  • For non-German-speaking applicants, a command of the German language is a prerequisite; proof of attendance at a recognised language school must be submitted

The following content is taught in the Make-up Design course:

  • Make-up in the overall artistic concept: conceptual design work/creative techniques/media presentations; subject-specific forms of design; anatomy/sculptural special effects/three-dimensional make-up techniques
  • Cultural studies: staging analysis/intermedia staging; reflection and analysis of cultural contexts, art and culture
  • Applied theory: production processes/process orientation; contract law for theatre and film; social skills and communication
  • Projects in cooperation with the Bayreuth Festival, the University of Television and Film, the Bavarian State Theatres, the Accademia La Scala Milano, the Opéra national de Paris as well as the Bayerische Schlösser- und Seenverwaltung

The intensive course on Wigs, Make-up and Special Make-up Effects for Stage and Screenart consists of a Bachelor's and a Master's programme. The focus of the Master's course is on professional specialisation and the realisation of an independent artistic project. The standard period of study for the Bachelor's course is six semesters, and three semesters for the Master's course

Graduates of the course on Wigs, Make-up and Special Make-up Effects for Stage and Screen work at outstanding municipal and state theatres as well as in the independent scene and in film and television.
