Theatre tells stories in their spaces!
In the Course of Scenography and Stage Costume Design, students not only learn the tools of the trade for working as stage and costume designers, but are also supported in their development as independent artistic personalities.
By looking closely and constantly trying new things out, as well as engaging with theatre texts, aesthetic theory and cultural history, Scenography and Stage Costume Design students develop independent artistic perspectives and individual modes of expression.
The Scenography and Stage Costume Design class is part of the Fine Arts degree at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich.
The Course of Scenography and Stage Costume Design at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich starts in the winter semester and is offered in cooperation with the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding. Requirements for the application are
- Submission of a portfolio of artistic work, which does not necessarily have to be of a theatrical nature, but should deal with spatial ideas and developments in a contemporary context
- Successful completion of the practical and oral admission exam
- General or artistic university entrance qualification
- If no professional qualification is available, proof of at least eight weeks of practical experience in a relevant profession must be provided.
The deadline for submitting the portfolio is 15 May each year. If this day falls on a Sunday or public holiday, then on the working day before. The Student Secretariat of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich accepts complete applications from March of each year.
Further informationThe Course of Scenography and Stage Costume Design primarily focuses on working on individual artistic projects and theatre productions in collaboration with the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding. Based on specific assignments and themes, stage design models, costume sketches, or spatial installations are developed. Joint productions with students from other disciplines provide training closely connected to the artistic processes and technical workflows of theatre. New and collective forms of working are explored and established.
Graduates of the Course of Scenography and Stage Costume Design work in the independent art and theatre scene as well as at renowned municipal and state theatres.

"Theatre tells stories in spaces, and it also tells them through spaces. For the profession of stage design, it is essential to be inspired by spaces and to explore their atmospheric effects. Through close observation and constant experimentation, independent artistic approaches and individual modes of expression are developed. The Scenography and Stage Costume Design program aims to provide the freedom and scope necessary for this while also offering training closely connected to the technical workflows of theatre."
