In the Directing Course for Spoken and Music Theatre, Performing Arts (Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts), students and lecturers work together to research future theatre aesthetics. Productions by directing students at the Theaterakademie or at cooperating theatre and performance centres are at the heart of the course.

The practical work on the rehearsal stages and in the laboratory is analysed and further developed in the core lessons.

The theoretical and artistic knowledge acquired during their studies - in philosophy, aesthetics, sociology, dramaturgy, theatre, opera and art history, music and performance theory, singing, acting, dance or speech training - is put into practice. For us, the classical craft of theatre is the starting point for the development of each student's own project-related craft.

The application deadline for both Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes is in October/November. To apply, you must submit a written concept for a theatre project that has not yet been realised and, for the Master's course, a film documentation of a theatre project including a written essay. The aptitude (examination) procedures usually take place in January on site at the Bayerische Theaterakademie and include interviews and practical work as part of an artistic-practical examination, in addition to the documents to be submitted. The programme begins in the summer semester. A German language level of B2 is required for admission to the programme.

More information

The theory and practice of directing are taught comprehensively in the Directing course: in seminars, colloquia and exercises, in own directing projects, which are also accompanied by mentoring from guest lecturers, through participation in festivals, in workshops and during theatre visits and excursions. Each student realises at least three productions/project works during the Bachelor's degree and at least two during the Master's degree, working closely with the other degree programmes at the Theatre Academy, the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, the Berlin University of the Arts and the Dresden University of Fine Arts (e.g. stage and costume design, make-up design, dramaturgy, composition, acting, musicals, musical theatre, scenic writing and cultural journalism). There are also regular feedback sessions on concept development and orientation talks on personal and professional development.

“Everyone who studies and teaches directing wants to get to know people who want to express themselves through the medium of theatre about the present they experience. How can the concepts of theatre be constantly redefined? How can we question and change current viewing habits?”
