The Master's programme in Arts and Cultural Journalism is a comprehensive response to changes in the media.
It is the only cultural journalism course in the German-speaking world to combine journalistic craft, media innovation and art analysis.
GET INVOLVED! APPLY NOW UNTIL 31.05.!
If you want to work in cultural journalism, you have to keep a cool head in the stream of data and languages, symbols and artistic forms of expression. Attitude and curiosity, speed and humour, creativity and unlimited thinking are required to untangle the linguistic confusion of our present. The Master's programme, which was launched in 2023, provides comprehensive preparation for these requirements, both in terms of skill as well as media and cultural analysis.
The degree course is aimed at applicants who are curious and knowledgeable about the various branches of arts and culture. Who do not shy away from the tension between tradition and technical progress. Who are keen to constantly broaden their cultural horizons. Who have an interest in debating with the public and use the latest technologies to advocate for appropriate visibility of cultural coverage in the media in a confident, knowledgeable, intelligent and contentious manner.
Prerequisites for application are:
- first professionally qualifying university degree (e.g. Bachelor's degree) or an equivalent degree from Germany or abroad
- Successful participation in the aptitude test
Application procedure:
- Online application by 31 May for the following winter semester: hmtm.de/bewerben
- A pre-selection will be made on the basis of the written application.
- The selected applicants will be invited to a one-day entrance examination in Munich in July.
- Participation in one of the selection days in Munich (always in July): Writing a commentary on a predetermined question, developing a concept for the innovative media implementation of a given cultural topic (group work), individual interview with the examination board
The Arts and Cultural Journalism course consists of twelve modules covering topics such as artistic and cultural discourse, journalistic forms of presentation, cross-disciplinary media production, format development and media research. In this strongly practice-oriented course, students acquire up-to-date qualifications and skills to successfully shape the diverse fields of activity of cultural journalism in central positions.
Close to the practice! Students are taught and intensively supervised in small groups by experienced professionals from the media industry. This gives them the opportunity to learn directly from practitioners and to establish valuable contacts in the industry through cooperation with regional and national media companies for a successful entry into the profession. Thanks to its location at the University of Music and Theatre Munich in cooperation with the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding, there is also direct proximity to artistic courses and thus to artistic production.
The course qualifies students for journalistic and editorial work in media companies in a variety of positions and contexts, e.g. as a cultural journalist, editor, media producer, author, programme planner, presenter, development editor, social media editor, entrepreneurship/self-employment. Potential employers: Newspaper and magazine publishers, broadcasters, TV stations, production companies (video, audio, print, web), news agencies.

“Everyone is talking. In foyers, tweets and talk shows. About world views, opinions and positions. Everyone is talking – and cultural journalists are talking non-stop. They inspire, moderate and criticise the debates in society.”
