Aptitude Examination Procedure

Bachelor of Arts

The audition has three stages: audition stages I, II and III. Candidates must pass stage I of the audition in order to be admitted to stage II. Candidates must pass the audition at stage II in order to be admitted to stage III of the audition.

Auditions I – III

The test takes place in the classrooms of the Theaterakademie at the Prinzregententheater, Prinzregentenplatz 12 in Munich.

The following shall be prepared for the audition:

  • at least five songs (at least one of which is in English);
    • of which a.) one is a scene from a musical;
    • of which b.) four are other songs (no more than one song that is not from a musical)
    • one folk song a cappella (in a key of your choice)
    • one choreography of your own of at least one minute in length
    • at least one dramatic monologue in German
    • one short prose text or one poem (all learnt by heart)
    • two instrumental pieces played either on the piano or on an instrument to be brought along by the candidate
    • in addition, elementary knowledge of music theory/aural skill will be tested at stage III (recognising intervals, basic knowledge of harmony).

Seven copies of a written list of the candidate’s repertoire are to be submitted to the Examination Commission the day the audition takes place!

The following applies to all rounds of the examination:

Academy pianists are available. There is also the possibility to bring your own pianist along, however.

The music (neatly bound and clearly legible; transposed if necessary) shall be brought to all rounds of the examination by candidates themselves.

Dance or training clothes are required for the movement tests.

For the candidate's own choreography, a recording of the music is to be brought along (on CD or cassette).

Audition stage I

At stage I of the audition, the applicant may choose which piece to present first. The Examination Commission may interrupt the candidate and decides on further presentations. If one of the songs, the monologue, the poem or the choreography is not prepared at all or is only partially prepared, stage I of the audition will be assessed to be a "fail". The dance examination takes place within a group. Passing stage I of the audition entitles the candidate to take part in stage II of the audition.

Audition stage II

The Examination Commission selects the items to be presented. The Examination Commission sets tasks to test candidates' vocal and musical abilities and acting fantasy and scenographic intelligence. If one of the songs, the monologue, the poem or the choreography is not prepared at all or is only prepared in part, stage II of the audition will be assessed to be a "fail".  A musical choreography is prepared within a group. Passing stage II of the audition entitles the candidate to take part in stage III of the audition.

Audition stage III

  1. Performance of a song from a musical chosen by the Examination Commission from the material the candidate brings along
  2. Group improvisation of a stage play
  3. Choreography from the audition stages I and II without further rehearsal
  4. Instrumental performance
  5. Music theory/aural skills

The Examination Commission has no obligation to examine applicants on all points. Guidance cannot be given!

Decision on admission to the course of studies:

Applicants are informed of the results of the examination rounds at the end of each round. This also applies to admission to the course of studies. As a rule, if an applicant fails the audition, it may be repeated once.

The regular period of studies leading to the award of a Bachelor of Arts degree is six semesters.
The first two semesters are deemed to be a probationary period within the meaning of the Statutes of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München (University of Music and Theatre Munich) of 13 March 2001.

Master of Arts

The three-semester master's program will begin in the winter semester. Next start of studies is September 2024.

Application deadline for the qualifying examination is 03.06.2024.

The aptitude test is divided into two stages.

Aptitude procedure stage I: Examination of the documents. Invitation to stage II based on passing stage I.
Suitability procedure stage II: 01.07.2024

Failure to pass the suitability procedure of stage I as well as the suitability or invitation to stage II is made by a written notice.

The first stage of the suitability procedure is the submission of the application documents.

The second stage of the aptitude test consists of a practical examination (duration: approx. 20 minutes). Applicants must prepare the following (by heart)

  • ten vocal numbers from different musical styles with a total duration of at least 30 minutes (at least three numbers each in German and English; at least two vocal numbers with choreography; at least one hit song; at least one chanson; at least two up tempo; at least two ballads)
  • additionally one choreography of free choice (if necessary with singing) and style (duration: at least one minute; the music can be played from a sound carrier [CD or MC])
  • three acting monologues in staged performance (at least one classical and at least one modern acting monologue; at least two acting monologues in German).

The board of examiners selects the works to be performed. If one of the above-mentioned works is not prepared or only partially prepared, the aptitude test will be graded as "failed".

The examination board may also set practical improvisation tasks from the fields of dance, music and acting in order to test the applicants' improvisational talent (ability to change, to get involved in given work tasks, to change practiced behavior patterns).

Seven copies of the program chosen by the applicants must be submitted in writing to the examination committee before the start of the examination.

The Theaterakademie provides piano accompanists; own piano accompanists are permitted. In any case, applicants must bring their own sheet music for the piano accompaniment.

In addition, a short musical choreography will be worked out with the applicants during the examination. This exam will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Movement talent
  • ability to express oneself artistically and in dance
  • ability to rehearse complex, staged movement sequences
