What is it about?

The two-year Master's programme focuses on training dramaturges in the fields of stage drama and/or musical theatre. The Master in Dramaturgy prepares students for all crucial fields of work in dramaturgy. In addition to theoretical specialist knowledge, artistic and conceptual practices are trained in the actual production processe.

Thanks to the close links with other courses and programmes at the Theaterakademie, students have the opportunity to work independently in the fields of drama, musical and opera dramaturgy or on directing projects right from the start. This artistic practice is embedded in a thorough teaching of work analysis, repertoire structure, cultural mediation, legal regulations for the stage, and much more.

The dramaturgy course is part of the cooperation between the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding and the Institute of Theater Studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich.

“Dramaturgy is one thing above all: extremely diverse. Dramaturgs create, analyse, adapt and contextualise stage works. They initiate and support play development and rehearsal processes. They communicate concerns, structures and artistic approaches both internally and externally. They communicate and document artistic processes. They seek to engage with the world in all genres and forms.”
Prof. Dr. Barbara Gronau
Former Head of the Dramaturgy course and President of the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding
