Dramaturgy (Master)

The course begins in the winter semester. The application deadline is April 30th each year. Admission to the first semester of the Master's programme requires a first professionally qualifying university degree of at least 180 ECTS credits or an equivalent degree from Germany or abroad in the fields of directing, acting, singing, theatre studies, musicology, media or cultural studies or another related subject as well as practical experience in the professional field of dramaturgy.

Applicants take part in a two-stage aptitude procedure, consisting of an online application and, in the second stage, a personal selection interview.

Requirements

  • The prerequisites for applying to the master's degree programme in dramaturgy are:
  • a first professionally qualifying university degree or an equivalent degree from Germany or abroad in the fields of directing, acting, singing, theatre studies, musicology, media studies or another related subject (in particular philology, art studies, philosophy, sociology)
  • practical experience in the professional field of dramaturgy, usually lasting at least two months in total

Application deadlines

The programme can only be started in the winter semester.

The application deadline for the aptitude procedure for the following winter semester is 30 April. Applications must be submitted electronically via the LMU online application portal.
The portal is activated one month earlier.

The selection interviews for the second application round take place in May or June. The date of the selection interview will be announced at least one week in advance by written invitation.

Application Fees

There are no application fees for the aptitude test.

List of documents to be submitted

  • Curriculum vitae in tabular form with photo;
  • Copy of the degree certificate from the first degree programme, if necessary with an official translation, as proof of the content of the first degree programme. If this certificate has not yet been issued, a ‘Transcript of Records’ must be submitted;
  • A copy of the written thesis from the first degree programme or documentation of non-written artistic theses (DVD, CD, reviews, references, etc.) in order to gain an impression of the level of engagement with dramaturgical topics. If these are not yet available, work produced during previous studies should be submitted.
  • Proof of practical experience in the field of dramaturgy, generally lasting at least two months;
  • Essay of a maximum of six pages, consisting of two parts, namely a report on the practical experience of a maximum of two pages, which also shows the motivation for the Master's programme in Dramaturgy, and, depending on the desired study focus, an analysis of a play or opera of your choice of a maximum of four pages (in each case the written templates, no productions!). This analysis is to be understood as dramaturgical preparatory work for a staged realisation of the chosen play and, against the background of the applicant's practical experience, should provide an opportunity and aptitude for an in-depth academic study of dramaturgy.
  • for the Music Theatre specialisation, suitable proof of musical-analytical competence

Procedure of the aptitude test

  • Applicants take part in a two-stage aptitude procedure.
  • Stage 1: Application via the LMU online application portal and pre-selection
  • Stage 2: Selection interview (15-30 minutes). The subject of the interview is a dramaturgical question from the fields of drama or musical theatre, depending on the subject area.
